“Little Billy Died” by Strangely Alright

Listening to a Strangely Alright song for the first time, is like receiving my Stitch Fix box in the mail. What’s inside this shipment! Not familiar with Stitch Fix? It’s an online personal shopper. You give them personal details necessary for choosing the right clothes for you, and then every few weeks they ship you a new outfit. I have a general idea of what to expect, but I never know what personal twist the shopper will include. Maybe something I had not thought of before.

That is what listening to SA is like. I have a general idea of what to expect, but I never know what special message is being included this time.

SA-1
SA-3

“Little Billy Died” is a soothingly, blunt messaged song written and produced by Regan Lane and Sean Van Dommelen. A song very relevant in today’s world of social media and online bullying. It was hard enough being ‘the weird kid’ in the days before technology. Kids would get made fun of, but at least they could leave it behind when they would go to their place of peace. Now? They take that bullying everywhere they go. It’s in their eyes and ears constantly. Even in the safety of their own beds. A child’s mind is fragile and vulnerable. Still innocent and not able to handle the brutality of the adult world.

The lyrics and musical flow perfectly emulate the contrast between that innocence and brutality. A very simple flow that has jarring, ‘real world’ words thrown in while telling the story. You feel the sweet innocence of childhood, but then the words like Fat, Fag, Hit and Hanging are inserted. It jolts you a bit. But that is what I appreciate about SA’s approach to this topic. Too many times, suicide is glamorized in a song. But not with ‘Little Billy Died.’ It shares the painful truth behind suicide. The possible consequence of treating someone poorly.

I love the musical influences that I hear in all of Strangely Alright’s songs. There is definitely a Beatles influence in “Little Billy Died.” The simple flowing melody, with the undercurrent of La La La throughout. The message is not being overpowered by the music. It’s supported by it.

Strangely Alright’s message of love and acceptance is so important right now. A refreshing change from all of the negativity and divisiveness we see everyday.

It’s a good time to be Strange and Alright. There are a lot of us out there looking for a place to fit in. And Strangely Alright makes us feel welcomed into their musical posse.

LET’S ROCK!

Little Billy Died ~ (LYRICS)

Billy was a kid
Who lived on my block
My best friend since the second grade
His mother was a fat girl who didn’t have a job
And daddy liked to swing it either way

Bill always talked about getting hit
For not lifting up the toilet seat

Little Billy
He just wanted to be free

And all the kids in school used to laugh at him
His clothes and hair
weren’t quite right for the day
He was always getting beat up
by a bully named Dave
And David thought that Billy was a fag

Billy always talked about this special place
Where only very special people go
Little Billy
Wanted just to be alone

Little Billy Died La La La La
Little Billy Died La La La La
Little Billy Died and he taught them all

Little Billy Cried La La La La
Little Billy Cried La La La La
Little Billy Died
And he taught them all

So Billy disappeared
From school for a week
The kids said he was weird and ran away

His mother found him hanging in their bathroom
I’m sure that he found his special place

And all the kids in school said they felt so sad.
So Sad.
But nobody ever really cared.
Little Billy
Lived his private little hell

Little Billy Died La La La La
Little Billy Died La La La La
Little Billy Died and he taught them all

Little Billy Cried La La La La
Little Billy Cried La La La La
Little Billy Died
And he taught them all
